Bringing Back Mezcal: Get hip to Mexico's original spirit
February 2014 — What happens when tequila becomes too trendy? Hipsters in Mexico City seek out a smokier sip and embrace their heritage in the process. Such is the story with mescal, a 450-year-old, made-in-Mexico spirit that predates tequila, but has been virtually unknown until now. "The mescal movement is being driven by urban Mexicans who are connecting to the countryside," says Eric Lorenz, president of Lorenz Agave Spirits, a company that imports mescal and tequila to Canada. February 18, 2014 — In anticipation of a new ham-flavored mezcal, our cocktail maven traces the roots of pechuga, the oddest bird in the agave-based spirit family. This March, chef José Andrés' restaurant Oyamel in Washington D.C. will be the first place to debut Del Maguey's new Ibérico, a mezcal made with ham that costs $200 per bottle. The pig parts are a new thing dreamed up by the Spanish chef, but there is a history of putting animals into mezcal in Mexico that dates back a few hundred years before bartenders dabbled with bacon infusions. February 2014 — Rain clatters on the metal roof above me, my boots are muddy, and I'm clutching a jicara, a small cup made from a gourd. My companions and I have spent the last four hours careening down the highway from Mexico City in a little sedan to get to this farm in the remote hills of Guerrero, close to Acapulco. We're here for one reason, and one reason only: to drink mezcal. "Drink it," Israel, our somewhat-English-speaking guide says, gesturing to my cup. When I ask for some particulars on what I might be drinking, he just repeats his command, so I take a sip. The liquid in my mouth is fruity, smoky, delicious – and strong. "Mezcal con Jamaica!" he announces, triumphant, expecting that I'll enjoy the hibiscus-infused version of the agave liquor. And I do. January 1, 2014 — We never really felt the premium tequila revolution in Vancouver, partly because the spirit had a tough time shaking its frat boy association but mostly because of insane pricing: $80 for the cheapest bottle of Patrón makes drinking cognac look thrifty. So it's with no small amount of stones that mezcal- -tequila's less famous cousin- -is hoping to be the next big thing in sipping spirits. But if there's something mezcal- -long the official drink of banditos and bikers- -has, it's cojones.Agave Week welcomes International Tequila Expo
May 19, 2013 — As mentioned last column, we're into Agave Week (May 19-24), which culminates in the International Tequila Expo (May 24, Hyatt Regency, 6-9 p.m.), that benefits B.C. Hospitality Foundation. This event offers a great chance to sample a wide range of tequila, as well as tequila and mezcal, during a series of seminars in the coming few days.Mezcal on the rise: Make room for tequila's older and smokier agave counterpart
May/June 2013 — If tequila is one of the most misunderstood spirits, then mezcal is a downright mystery. But bartenders are getting schooled on the smoky spirit says Eric Lorenz, Canada's first mezcalier, whose knowledge of all things agave is encyclopedic. (He's also a tequila enthusiast and educator who holds the Distintivo "T" Diploma from the Consejo Regulador del Tequila). After completing the first level of mezcalier training from the pros (including the distiller from Scorpion Mezcal), about 20 bartenders working at establishments such as West, Hawksworth and The Shameful Tiki Shack in Vancouver, are a step closer to earning the "mezcalier" moniker.Just Moved From LA, In Need of Mezcal
Shoot, I'm Hungry Blog - May 27, 2013 — One of the best things about being a food person is that your friends are inevitably food people. Food people are the best. They have usually worked in or around the service industry so they know how it feels to be treated every which way, and, unless they are completely jaded, are humorous, generous and courteous. They appreciate the reward of a well-earned meal and a great cocktail/beer/glass of wine at the end of a long day. They understand the art of food and drink, and are knowledgeable of flavors, ingredients and presentation, so they will play the game of "guess the herbs & spices" with you, and are typically Facebooking/Tweeting/Instagramming their adventures along with you, rather than waiting, annoyed, for you to finish so they can consume what is in front of them. When the Chef and I lived in L.A., we enjoyed the abundant selection of mezcal: tequila's smoky, lesser known and often misunderstood cousin. I made up a simple cocktail of Sombra Mezcal, orange juice, muddled strawberry, cayenne pepper, cinnamon and egg white, which I mixed often while the Chef prepared our midnight (or later) dinners.
Vancouver International Tequila Expo ready to cause a buzz
Metro News Vancouver — May 22, 2013 — Once known solely as a lubricant for frat house debauchery, tequila is increasingly making the rounds at high-end dinner parties and summer patios in B.C. Nowhere is this transformation more evident than at the Vancouver International Tequila Expo (VITE), which has a mandate to “increase the presence of tequila in Western Canada.” Visitors to the show, which runs Friday at the Hyatt Regency, will have a chance to sip tequila from glass stemware, and watch expert mixologists shake up tequila-infused cocktails. “We really are trying to change people’s perceptions,” said Eric Lorenz, founding partner of VITE. “It’s not something you have to cover up with lime and salt.”
Agave Week: Time to Taste Tequila and Meet Your Mezcal (Video)
Hired Belly Blog — May 17, 2013 — When we first met Eric Lorenz a couple of years ago, Tequila was something you made margaritas with and, well, who had even heard of Mezcal? Fast forward two years: Lorenz is busy putting the final touches on Vancouver’s second annual International Tequila Expo (May 24, Hyatt Regency, 6-9 pm). He co-founded the event with long time promoter of all things tastefully Mexican, Manuel Otero. And these days, Tequila is very much on the local radar. This year the expo marks the conclusion of Agave Week (May 19-24), with a greatly expanded program of Tequila and Mezcal tastings and seminars, at Legacy Liquor Store.

Premium Tequilas for Sipping and Savouring
If you equate tequila with salty shot glasses and regret, it's time to try sipping instead of slamming. These premium tequilas are a good place to start
BC Living — May 15, 2013 — Scan the shelves of your local liquor joint and you’ll likely see tequila bottles embellished with snakes and scorpions, deer heads and donkeys, or in the shape of skulls and handguns. (There’s even one that’s supposedly inspired by an 18th-century European decanter, but we suggest you hide it in the cabinet when your in-laws visit.) It’s no wonder many people still approach tequila with a little bit of fear and much loathing, especially the day after slamming back shots at some beachside bar. The problem isn’t what’s on the outside of the bottle, unless its an absence of the all-important words "100% agave." If the label simply reads "tequila," then it’s mixto, a blended spirit that has a minimum of 51% agave sugars. What’s the other 49%? Let’s just say that’s where the post-drinking hammering in your head comes from.

Inside Vancouver — May 8, 2013 — You've had your run-ins with tequila. But what about mezcal? Tequila's rustic cousin, with a distinctive smoky flavour and throat-clearing bite, takes the spotlight during Vancouver Agave Week, May 20-24. The celebration of all things derived from the wondrous agave plant culminates in the second annual Vancouver International Tequila Expo on May 24 (Expect more on that event from our blogger Taraneh). The lead-up to the big Tequila Expo, however, will feature a series of smaller tastings and seminars designed to educate drinkers on the joys of mezcal and other agave-based delicacies. Tasting Room Confidential — May 7, 2013 — The Vancouver Tequila Expo folks could not have picked a more tropical day to throw their launch party April 23 on the patio of Joe Fortes. Warm, dry and bright – perfect for tequila tasting – it felt like being in Guadalajara again. I started with these bottles, anjejo first, then to blanco and reposado. Don’t ask me why. Meanwhile, organizing partner Eric Lorenz of Lorenz Agave Spirits gave me the lowdown on this 2nd annual tequilapolooza. He said that last year’s event presented 20 brands of tequila to a sold-out crowd of 500. This year they’ll feature 25-30 brands to a maximum-capacity crowd of 1500 at the Vancouver Hyatt Regency on Friday, May 24th.

Have YOU Hugged your Agave lately?
Half Empty — April 15, 2013 There was a time where the thought of Tequila did two things for me… 1) Shudder and 2) order a backing of Clamato or Pineapple Juice to "cut the bite". That was until I was recently invited by a former colleague to a networking and tasting event of the Tequila and Mezcal variety. I was intrigued, Mezcal…. Isn't that what the great writer Hunter.S Thompson spoke about? And didn't it get him into all sorts of trouble? So sure, why not, I'm always up for learning about new liquor.
Tequila Renaissance
Just For Canadian Dentists — March/April 2013 Eric Lorenz hands me a tiny vial of liquid and asks, "What do you smell?" The herbal aroma is familiar. Oregano? It's actually thyme. The second aroma is an easy guess: mint. "Which mint?" asks Lorenz, and hands me a third vial. Peppermint. Spearmint. "In which order?" Wrong again. I've only nosed a few of the 50 vials of tequila aromas on hand, but the subtlety of tequila has already become obvious. And we haven't even had a sip yet.

Our experience of tequila in BC is like a Mexican all-inclusive resort — you play in an isolated stretch of beach while the rest of the country is out of sight, out of mind. Like me, your first experience of Mexico's national spirit was probably the lick, sip, and suck of a tequila cruda, a series of which were intended to delver a masochistic blow to the head. Then, one day, someone gives you a taste of Don Julio or Patron, and you realize that shooting tequila is muy primitivo. Instead, you wake up the next morning feeling refreshed instead of thrashed. The education begins. How I Drank Tequila and Didn't Get a Hangover

Hopscotch Vancouver – Mezcal Master Class Tasting
November 28, 2011 — With all great varieties of liquor to be tasted at the Hopscotch Vancouver whiskey festival, who would have thought there was something new to discover beyond whiskey. Just before my Johnnie Walker whiskey tasting class, I got the chance to learn about the tradition that goes behind the production of the Mexican liquor, mezcal. Like a classier artisan-crafted version of tequila, the methods behind mezcal production creates a taste combination similar to smoking a fine Cuban cigar while eating sweet aged jerky. Luckily for me, I was under the influence of Spirits of Mexico 2010 judging panel member and front runner to becoming Canada's tequila ambassador, Eric Lorenz of Lorenz Agave Spirts.

BC Liquor Stores: Taste Magazine Spring 2012: Tequila was always a spirit that inspired awe , fascination and a remarkable amount of myth.
The first modern tequila revolution began in the mid-1980s, with the explosion of premium tequilas such as Cabo Wabo and Patron, which were a far cry from the tequilas that were responsible for many Mexican holiday hangovers. But long before that, tequila was always a spirit that inspired awe, fascination and a remarkable amount of myth. Tequila is a Denomination of Origin spirit unique to Mexico, where 110 to 130 distilleries produce nearly 1,500 different tequilas. Tequila, like mezcal, is made from the agave plant, which is a succulent and not, as many people believe, a cactus. When agave reaches 8 to 12 years of age, farmers harvest its core, the piña. To make tequila, the piña is baked or steamed then shredded, fermented, distilled and often aged. To make mezcal, which is rarely aged, the piña is first pit-roasted underground for three to five days, which adds a distinctive smoky flavour. Unaged or "blanco" tequila is herbaceous and floral, while aged tequila, like cognac or whisky, has a spicy complexity, roundness and warmth. See page 37 for full article. -
